THE SWAP

CleanCo Clean V — The maker describes it as smooth, with green apple and cinnamon spice and a warm finish. It stays clean in mixed drinks, which is what a Cosmo base must do. About $30 a bottle.

No bottle? No problem. Use 2 oz of chilled tangerine juice with a small splash of soda water. It drinks brighter and fruitier, and the cranberry and lime still give it the Cosmo shape.

Why this version works

Vodka is the quietest spirit in the classic canon, and that helps here. A clean vodka alternative gives the drink body and a gentle warmth without stealing the scene, while cranberry brings colour and tart fruit and lime brings the snap. Orange juice does the quiet work of the orange liqueur in the original, rounding the sharp edges into something smooth. Shaken hard and strained into a cold glass, this reads as a cosmopolitan first and a zero proof drink second.

The Recipe Card

Serves 1 — tap to scale:
  • 2 oz zero proof vodka alternative
  • 1 oz cranberry juice cocktail
  • 0.5 oz fresh orange juice
  • 0.5 oz fresh lime juice

Garnish: An orange twist and a lime wheel

The method

  1. Put a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for at least ten minutes. A cosmopolitan served up has no ice to hide behind, so the glass has to do the chilling.
  2. Add the vodka alternative, cranberry juice cocktail, orange juice and lime juice to a shaker.
  3. Fill the shaker with ice and shake hard for fifteen seconds, until the tin frosts.
  4. Strain into the cold glass, using a small sieve if you have one, so the surface stays smooth and clear.
  5. Squeeze the orange twist over the surface so its oils land on the drink, set the lime wheel on the rim, and serve it at once.

Make it yours

White cosmo

Swap the cranberry juice cocktail for white cranberry juice and the drink goes pale gold while the lime keeps it sharp.

Sparkling

Top the strained drink with an ounce of well chilled soda water for a lighter and livelier serve.

Pomegranate twist

Swap half the cranberry juice for pomegranate juice and the colour deepens and the fruit turns darker.

Mistakes to avoid

Bottled lime juice. A cosmopolitan is four ingredients. There is no room for a dull one, and fresh lime is the snap the whole drink hangs on.

A gentle shake. This drink wants a hard shake. A lazy one leaves it warm and separated and short on that silky surface.

A warm glass. Served up means no ice in the glass to rescue a warm pour. Chill the glass like it is part of the recipe, because it is.

Serving and batching

Serve it up and immediately, while the surface is still smooth and the glass is still frosted. For a group, use the pitcher method in the questions above, keep the base cold in the fridge, and shake every serve to order so each glass arrives properly cold.

Questions, Answered

Does a virgin cosmopolitan taste like a real cosmopolitan?

Very close. The cranberry, lime and orange are all there, the colour is right, and the shake gives it the same cold and silky texture. The honest difference is the finish, which is clean and bright rather than warming.

What cranberry juice should I use?

Use cranberry juice cocktail for the classic pink colour and a little sweetness built in. If all you have is pure unsweetened cranberry juice, the drink will be much more tart, so add a quarter ounce of simple syrup and taste before you strain.

Can I make it without a vodka alternative?

Yes. The fallback on this page uses chilled tangerine juice and a splash of soda in place of the base. It is fruitier, but the shape of the drink stays the same and it still serves up like a Cosmo.

How do I batch it for a group?

Multiply everything by eight and stir it in a pitcher without ice, then refrigerate. Shake each serve with ice as you pour it, because a Cosmo served up lives or dies on being properly cold.

Zero proof means these drinks are made without alcohol. Some zero proof bottles and bitters carry trace amounts (under 0.5% ABV), about what you would find in a ripe banana or a glass of orange juice. If you are pregnant or avoiding alcohol entirely for health reasons, check your bottle's label and go with what you are comfortable with.
