Dry January Starter Kit: Seven Drinks for Week One
Everything a first Dry January actually needs: the shopping list, the five bottle and no bottle strategies, and seven drinks mapped to the first seven days.

Dry January fails in the fridge, not in the willpower. The people who sail through it are the ones whose kitchen was ready: something cold, something bitter, something to build at six in the evening when the ritual comes knocking. This kit is the whole setup, drinks mapped day by day for the first week, in two versions: one bottle and no bottle.
The shopping list
The one bottle path: one zero proof gin alternative (the ranking in By the Bottle will steer you), one case of fiery ginger beer, tonic water in small cans, limes, lemons, mint, soda water, agave syrup, and one bag of good ice. That is the entire month, structurally.
The no bottle path: everything above minus the gin, plus apple cider vinegar and sugar for a shrub, black tea, and a jar of good cherries. The From Scratch pillar was built for you.
The seven days
Day 1, the statement drink: a Zero Proof Gin and Tonic, built properly with big ice. Day one deserves the flagship ritual, not a compromise.
Day 2, the crowd pleaser: a Virgin Mojito. Mint, lime, sparkle. It tastes like a Friday, which tricks the calendar nicely.
Day 3, the fireside one: a Zero Proof Old Fashioned or its tea based fallback. Slow, stirred, serious. This is the drink that proves evenings are intact.
Day 4, the workhorse: a Virgin Moscow Mule. Ninety seconds, copper mug, ginger fire. The midweek slump does not survive it.
Day 5, the salted one: a Zero Proof Margarita. Make the full salted rim production of it. Ritual is the whole point.
Day 6, the holiday: a Virgin Piña Colada, umbrella up. January in Winnipeg, or anywhere, is no match for a blender full of July.
Day 7, the victory lap: dealer’s choice. Rebuild whichever of the six you liked most, and notice that you now have opinions about zero proof drinks. That is the month working.
The three rules that carry the month
Keep the hour, change the glass. If six in the evening was drink time, six in the evening is still drink time. The ritual is the habit; the ethanol was just an ingredient.
Cold, bitter, sparkle. When a craving shows up unscheduled, it is usually asking for one of those three sensations. A freezing glass of tonic with lime handles most ambushes.
Stock like you mean it. The kit fails when the fridge is empty on a tired Thursday. Buy the ginger beer by the case and the limes by the bag, in December, before you need the discipline to shop for them.
December is when this page does its best work, so bookmark it, send it to the friend who announces their Dry January every year, and meet back here on day one. The bar will be stocked.
Questions, Answered
Do I need to buy zero proof spirits for Dry January?
No. They help, especially for the evening ritual, but the no bottle path on this page, built on shrubs, syrups, teas and good ginger beer, covers the whole month. Buy one bottle if you want a treat, not because the month requires it.
What is the single most useful purchase?
A fiery ginger beer, bought by the case. It fixes mules, bucks, spritzes and plain soda fatigue, and its heat reads like spirit bite, which is the sensation most people actually miss in week one.
When does Dry January get easier?
Most people report the second weekend is the hardest stretch, and the habit loosens after it. Plan your best drinks for days ten to fourteen, not just for day one, and the month carries itself.
What if I slip one night?
Then you had twenty something dry days and one not dry one, which is a completely different month from the one you were going to have. The kit does not grade you. Pour a good drink the next evening and carry on.
